ANZAC EVE YOUTH VIGILS

ANZAC EVE YOUTH VIGILS – SOUTH AUSTRALIA

We encourage the youth of South Australia to have an immersive experience on Anzac Day whilst paying tribute to our fallen and the sacrifices made in conflict. A meaningful way is by participating in an overnight youth vigil.

The RSL South Australia Adelaide Anzac Eve Youth Vigil is a youth inspired event. It has been held since 1999 at the South Australian National War Memorial (SANWM), corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, Adelaide from 6.00pm Anzac eve 24 April, to approximately 5.30am Anzac morning 25 April.

It is a formal ‘holding ground’ ceremonial guard of honour over some twelve hours, where youth ‘stand vigil’ during the hours of darkness.  It is the first and longest ceremony of remembrance on the State Anzac Day calendar.

At 7.30pm on Anzac Eve the Dedication Ceremony ‘at the going down of the sun’ is attended by the Governor and VIPs including members of parliament, service heads and invited guests. This ceremony is conducted by youth (with adult mentoring).

The vigil event is the only known opportunity in South Australia where so many different youth development organisations and kindred/multicultural groups meet together in friendship and commemoration. Scroll down for vigil participant organisations.

There are other Anzac Eve vigils every year across South Australia, and our youth have now created their own Anzac Day tradition.
